Students Share Wig and Make-up Masterclass with Spanish School
Hermanos Larringa BHIP Bilbao, a Spanish school specialising in Hair and Beauty qualifications have recently visited Rotherham College’s training salon, Inspire, to share skills and experience masterclasses in historical make-up and wig making.
The first masterclass delivered by tutor Anne Derbyshire, was a masterclass in historical hair, wigs and make up covering the 17th Century and 18th century. This proved to be a fun session, learning how to prep the hair under a wig so the wig can be attached securely. The make-up was made to be pale as was the fashion in these centuries across Europe; finally, a bright lip was added with a beauty spot.
Anne said, “The wigs have originally come from the media department at Retford Post-16 Centre, where I teach wigs and media make-up, so my students had already set them using wooded dowels and steamed them into styles.
“The inspiration came from Mary Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette. In addition, historical charity English Heritage have been doing some research into how make-up and wigs were worn and proved interesting for all the students involved.”
Spanish students also shared skills with Level 2 Hairdressing students and communicated with our regular clients, whilst the Beauty and Media Make-up students went into the beauty commercial salon with tutor Tracy Mills.
Exchange visits with Hermanos Larringa BHIP Bilbao and other visits from schools across the world have been arranged with Rotherham College for the past three years, a partnership that Inspire Hair Salon looks forward to continue.
