Engineered to Success: Former Level 3 Student Graduates From University With Plans for PGCE
A former Rotherham College student has since gone on to graduate from university and is planning on undertaking a PGCE qualification to become a Teacher.
Nasir Ilyas left Rotherham College in 2014, after completing his Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Engineering, and has since gone on to graduate from university.
Sheffield Hallam University offered Nasir a place on their Aeronautical Engineering course, which he graduated from after working extremely hard. Since then, he has become a Supply Teacher, helping young individuals across the region realise their potential.
Nasir has gained a passion for teaching and now wants to progress on to his PGCE to be able to teach maths or another STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subject. Nasir spoke about how College gave him a vast amount of opportunities after completing his Level 3 course.
He said: ‘’Studying at Rotherham College was the best decision I ever made as it opened up so many doors for me. I didn’t have the best GCSE grades when I started my Level 2 course, yet I left with a Level 3 qualification which got me into university.
‘’Being able to go to university was fantastic and is something I never thought would be possible. Now I have graduated, I am able to study for a PGCE which will enable me to become a Teacher – a career I have always wanted to pursue.
‘’Coming to College at Level 2 can help you to progress right up to Postgraduate study – I would recommend the Engineering course at Rotherham to anyone.’’
Geoff Coughlan, Curriculum Team Leader, oversees the progression within the Engineering Curriculum. He spoke about the importance of gaining your College qualifications to be able to have a successful career in Engineering.
He said: ‘’Seeing a student come to us with poor GCSE results, to then go on to be eligible for postgraduate study is fantastic. It shows that Rotherham College provides you with the step you need to enter Higher Education and reach your dream career.
‘’The engineering courses that we offer are taught by industry-experienced staff who can provide you with all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need for your next steps. Whether this is to go straight into work, to become an apprentice, or going off to university – our Engineering staff are committed to helping you progress.
‘’Nasir’s story shows how College can help you progress to do whatever you want to do and achieve your dream career.’’
