Media Make-up Students Impress External Employers in Pressure Test
Rotherham College Media Make-up Level 2 students recently demonstrated their innovative and creative skillset through completing a Pressure Test in front of external examiners and employers this month.
Pressure Tests are a method of upskilling and development designed to challenge students to display their industry skills through following a specific criterion under examination.
This specific Pressure Test enabled students to bring to life a final make-up ‘look’ on a model. The process started with the students creating a mood board, which showed a plan and a conceptualised version of their ideal final look.
The students were assessed by external examiners and industry experts, who examined the whole process of creating the final look from start to finish. Students could achieve a pass, merit, or distinction based upon the skills displayed and the technical appearance of the final look. Pressure Tests are part of the College’s partnership with WorldSkills UK, which aims to raise standards in technical training and apprenticeships. WorldSkills UK Creative Media Make-up competitions are designed by industry experts and assess students’ knowledge, practical skills, and employability attributes in a competitive, timed environment.
Rotherham College has worked closely with WorldSkills since joining the programme in 2020, where regular competitions, training and the upskilling of students and staff have been an integral part of the partnership.
Level 2 Student Hajra Bibi, who is an adult learner on the Media Make-up course believes that Pressure Tests are a great way to exhibit their talent and the skills they have learnt on the course.
She said: “I absolutely loved it. I’m really happy with how my look turned out. It’s great fun and very useful to practice on models in a timed environment as it helps to prepare all of us for real life, industry work.”
Georgia Thoday, Level 2 Media Make-up student added: “The Pressure Tests that we do are stressful, but fun. I really enjoy the pressure and enjoy the chance to show employers from outside College what I have learnt. Our Tutors have also been extremely supportive throughout the whole process.”
The Pressure Test, like many others, was held in Rotherham College’s fantastic Media Make-up specific salon facilities. Industry-standard facilities like these allow students to find their craft and help to sculpt a career in salon management or as Make-up Artists in the film/music industry.
