Captivating creativity: Beauty learners inspired by body art masterclass
White Walkers, dragons, and a galaxy were just a few of the remarkable transformations demonstrated for Rotherham College Level 1 and 2 Hair and Media Make-up learners in a recent make-up masterclass.
Treasure House (supplier of professional, theatrical, special effects and media make-up) make-up artist Samantha Helen showed how learners can push the boundaries of body art with techniques such as 3D illusion, character work and basic brush stroke.
As well as gaining practical skills and experience, the workshop also gave learners the opportunity to find out about what it’s like to work in the make-up industry, what job roles are available, and get advice on how to secure their dream job.
Samantha, who owns her own business offering face and body art commissions plus hosting masterclasses and demonstrations in colleges to teach others body art, shared with the learners the importance of making the most of their time at College. She said, “There is so much more to the industry than just one section, for example, in beauty, you also need to be skilled in hair. All areas taught on Rotherham College’s Hair and Media Make-up course are important. Even if you’re not interested in a particular module, it’s essential you understand the process involved.”
The importance of building good working relationships and gaining valuable in-industry experience was also noted by Samantha.
She added: “Work experience is so important. Even though you’re not going to get paid, it helps you understand your trade and helps you see if it’s the job you want to be in. There’s the issue of ‘you can’t get experience without experience’ so I would say don’t be afraid go out there and push and fight for job roles; get in touch with different make-up artists and agencies to assist and be active in the industry.”
Rotherham College Hair and Media Make-up Curriculum Team Leader Katie Asgari arranged the masterclass with Treasure House.
Katie said: “Workshops like this are invaluable. They give learners extra skills as well as access to people in the industry, so they can find out about any available roles and network, which they get a lot out of.”
