The Proof is in the Pudding: Student Star Bakers Bake Cakes for Macmillan

Cakes weren’t the only thing rising in Rotherham College’s Wharncliffe kitchen recently, as student star bakers helped raise funds for cancer charity Macmillan by baking cakes designed by themselves.

Level 2 Health and Social Care students Charlotte Bailey, Minah Hussain and Lauren-Jade Cotterhill designed their own cakes and baked them to be used as part of a Macmillan coffee morning. Rotherham College has now contributed toward a local fundraising drive that has so far raised £798.24 for Macmillan.

Charlotte said: “My cake has a few layers with chocolate matchmakers round the edge and aero bubbles patterned on the top.

A piece of one of the layers broke off early on! We’ve managed to fix it though and it looks great with fudge icing.”

Curriculum Team Leader for Catering and Hospitality Darren Foden supervised the students as they prepared their sweet treats.

Darren said: “Rotherham College students were invited to a bake-off challenge based on the Macmillan coffee morning. They had to submit ideas to our senior leadership team; Charlotte, Lauren-Jade and Minah’s designs looked great and so were chosen.

They’ve worked brilliantly and not been phased by this challenge. I can’t fault them at all with their design ideas and the way they’ve turned out. The cakes are a big credit to their efforts and skill.”

Lauren-Jade remarked: “Macmillan is about raising funds for cancer research – it’s a great cause and is why we did this. It will raise money for people who really need support.”

Minah added: “I’ve made a vanilla sponge cake with strawberry jam. I was worried that I’d made a cake which would be too sweet but it seems to have come out alright!

I’ve done a Macmillan coffee morning before with my cousin in Sheffield; Macmillan played a big role in my grandparents’ lives.”

This helps a great cause – it feels rewarding.”
