Games Animation Students Host Social Action Project

Recently, Rotherham College’s Games Animation Year 1 and 2 students hosted a Game Play fundraiser afternoon for students and staff as part of a new Social Action project to raise money for Rotherham Hospital’s Children’s Ward.

The goal of this ongoing Social Action project is to raise funds for a new Nintendo Switch games console for the children on the ward at Rotherham Hospital. This event was the first of many, as Games Animation students from each year group are aiming to organise a monthly event to raise funds for the cause. They raised an impressive total of £53.76 from their first event, already exceeding their target.

The event saw the Games Animation students take over two floors of the Wentworth building, where they hosted a wide range of games for all tastes. The games that were available to play were MarioKart, Super Smash, Fifa 22, Tekken 7, Rocket League, Arcades (retro games), Table Tennis and Board Games.

As well as this, a table tennis table was set up in the corridor, accompanied by music and a bake sale to boost donations. Furthermore, the second-year students ran an informal workshop on how to create games and held a showing of the film ‘Shrek’ over in the University Centre Rotherham’s seminar room.

Rotherham College Assistant Principal David Smith got involved in a game of table tennis with students and said:

“It’s great to be raising money for such an important local charity in such a fun way. Well done to all the students involved, they created a fantastic event.”

Games Animation Curriculum Leader Martin Deshayes McCourt supported this event and was impressed with the organisation of the students. He said:

“We are really proud of the students from our cohort for organising such a fun yet meaningful event for such a great cause. With our fantastic facilities, it is the very least we can do. Watch this space for many more events like this!”
