Arts Degree Students Showcase Talent in UCR Exhibition
Degree-level students from Graphic Design, Graphic Communication, Fashion, Fine Art, Media Moving Image and Photography have displayed their final pieces for the Arts Degree Showcase, open to the public from Tuesday 28th May until Friday 7th June in the Seminar Room at University Centre Rotherham (UCR).
The Degree Show also had a private viewing on Friday 24th May, giving family, friends and other specially invited guests the chance to be the first to see the display, as well as students having the opportunity to network and sell their prints.
Paige Thompson, a Fine Art student said in her statement about her work, “I have found myself being drawn towards surface design, with print and pyrography being the main techniques I enjoy working with. Drawing has always been a huge passion of mine, and I aim to continue incorporating this into my work.”
Students worked on their final pieces inspired by a variety of themes, from eras from history to choice of medium. Sophie Woodcock, a Fashion student says about her inspiration, “I wanted the Ancient Egyptian influence to be apparent but very subtle, and not solely focused on the idea. I created unique streetwear styles with clip fastenings, PVC fabric and prints and paired them with gold armour, golden scarab beetles and wings to bring both inspirations together.”
Dale Richardson, a Graphic Design student commented on the success of the private viewing. He said, “The viewing went very well – I heard a lot of positive remarks about mine and my peers work and it was great to see everyone’s hard work paying off.
“I sold quite a few prints and the highlight of the evening for me was being offered a private tour of Wentworth Woodhouse for work I designed for them a few months ago.”
On his inspiration behind his work, Dale added, “Inspiration for my work can vary depending on what I’m doing, but I do try to use my surroundings such as the places I visit, or the things I see when just out for a walk as a constant source of motivation.”
You can visit the Arts Degree Show between 9.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday until Friday 7th June.
