Amazing Experience: Rotherham College Students Help Run Matchday at Rotherham Titans
Rotherham College students from different curriculum areas gained valuable work experience at the matchday tie of Rotherham Titans and Sheffield Tigers.
Photography, videography and catering students all took part in a full-working day, assisting staff members to organise the event and ensure everything ran smoothly.
Photography and videography students managed to capture moments of the last game of the season, creating a 10-minute show reel and adding shots to their portfolios. Catering students served food in the hospitality area, and worked on the bar during busier periods.
The work experience was organized through the ‘Higher Skills, Higher Growth’Scheme. This is delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, The Sheffield College and the RNN Group, who run Rotherham College, Dearne Valley College, North Notts College (Including the Retford Post-16 Centre, and University Centre Rotherham.
‘Higher Skills, Higher Growth’ aims to connect young people with training opportunities, short and long-term projects and placements, and match skilled individuals to appropriate work. Students thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was made even better by Rotherham Titans securing a win. James Wood, Level 3 Photography student, was a particular fan of the rugby.
He said: ‘’I love rugby as a sport, so to gain work experience at this event is incredible. The fact that Rotherham Titans won 36-17 made it even better, as the atmosphere was amazing which made great content to capture on camera.
‘’I have already volunteered to come back again, and it would be great next time to gain managerial experience by assisting other photography students at the event.
‘’It has given me the opportunity to add lots of shots to my portfolio, which I can use within my career.’’
After the match had finished, all students ensured the celebrations and end of season award ceremony was captured on camera, and that all guests were catered to. Catering and Hospitality students served food and made sure the bar was managed during busier periods. Natalie Browne, Level 3 Catering and Hospitality student, explained how it was the largest event she had worked at.
She said: ‘’I have had work experience before in the sector, but I have never worked at an event as big as this. The atmosphere has been fantastic and I have had a really busy but fun day.
‘’I have got to interact with a variety of customers, and been given the responsibility to work in different areas of the bar and kitchen.
‘’Gaining experience on this scale gives me so much confidence and will help me massively moving forward in my career.’’
