At Rotherham College you will gain hands-on experience in our very own commercial training restaurant, The Wharncliffe.

You will learn in a fast-paced environment, craft your cookery skills in the kitchen and perfect professional customer service skills with lunch, afternoon tea and dinner service. You will also be able to organise and cater for charity events and test your new skills in competitions.

All of our Catering and Hospitality courses are taught by tutors with years of industry experience who will pass their knowledge on to you to use within the classroom and beyond.

You will learn both the practical skills and the theory needed to work in the industry, including training in both a kitchen and a front of house setting. You will learn everything from knife skills, food and beverage service and barista skills to pastry, confectionery and menu planning.

We have a range of courses available in every aspect of catering and hospitality, so you can choose to specialise in the area you love the most and take the first steps towards your dream job. Our courses will give you the skills and knowledge required to have a successful career in the exciting and vibrant sector.

Chef

Average salary - £22,000 to £40,000*

Chefs prepare, cook and present food in hotels, bars and restaurants.

Day to day tasks:

Develop recipes, plan menus, create new dishes, research new ingredients and suppliers, prepare and cook dishes and desserts, control stock and inspect deliveries, maintain food safety and hygiene standards, supervise kitchen staff to make sure food is of high quality, presented well and served on time.*

Working environments:

You could work at a restaurant, in an NHS or private hospital, at a school, at a college or on a cruise ship. Your working environment may be hot, humid and physically demanding. You may need to wear a uniform.*

Restaurant Manager

Average salary - £18,000 to £28,000*

Restaurant managers organise the day-to-day running of their venue and make sure customers are happy with the food and service they receive.

Day to day tasks:

Plan menus with your chefs, organise shifts and rotas for kitchen and waiting staff, manage stock control and budgets, work closely with food and drink suppliers, make sure the restaurant follows licensing, food hygiene and health and safety rules, recruit new staff and help to train them, work on plans for large events like weddings or birthdays and deal with customer complaints.*

You could work at a restaurant. Your working environment may be physically demanding. You may need to wear a uniform.*
