Mechanical Engineer

Average salary - £26,000 to £52,000*

Mechanical engineers design, build and install machinery used in industries like power, engineering, transport and manufacturing.

Day to day tasks:

Turn research ideas into technical plans using computer aided design software, test mechanical systems and analyse data to make improvements, assess the safety of mechanical machinery and equipment, oversee maintenance programmes in buildings, power stations and production plants, manage a project team of technicians, designers and other engineering professionals.*

Working environments:

You could work in an office, in a factory or visit sites. Your working environment may be outdoors in all weathers.*

Welder

Average salary - £24,000 to £45,000*

Welders cut, join and shape metals, alloys and other materials in the manufacturing, construction and engineering industries.

Day to day tasks:

Follow drawings and instructions, prepare materials to be joined and select the right welding procedure, calibrate tools and operate welding equipment, inspect and test the quality of joins using precision measuring instruments and dismantle and cut up metalwork, for example during demolitions.*

Working environments:

You could work in a workshop, on a construction site or on a demolition site. Your working environment may be hot, cramped and at height. You may need to wear safety clothing and use safety equipment.*
