Self-Injury Awareness Day: Support, Awareness, and Resources for Students

28 February 2025

On Saturday 1st March, we observe Self-Harm Awareness Day, an international event dedicated to raising awareness about self-harm and contributing factors.

Self-harm often arises from emotional distress, and while it is not intended as a means of ending one’s life, it can be fatal or increase the risk of suicide. Studies estimate that around 14.6 million individuals are affected each year, highlighting the importance of understanding and addressing this complex issue.

At Rotherham College, we are committed to fostering a compassionate and supportive environment where students can openly discuss their mental health challenges. Self-harm is often used as a way to cope with pain, and by raising awareness and reducing stigma, we aim to make it easier for students to reach out for help.

This day is an opportunity to share stories, create understanding, and remind everyone that it’s okay to talk about mental health struggles. We’re here to ensure that you have the support and resources to navigate these challenges with confidence and care.

Urgent Support: Immediate Help When You Need It

When the emotional pain feels overwhelming, self-harm may seem like the only way to cope. But there is always a way out, and knowing where to turn for urgent help is crucial.

Mental Health Support: A Safe Place to Talk

But remember: You’re not alone in this. Mental health struggles are common, and reaching out for help can be game-changing.

At Rotherham College, we offer Mental Health First Aid and Counselling Services to support you through emotional and psychological challenges. These services provide a confidential, supportive space where you can express your feelings, gain insight, and discover strategies to manage emotional difficulties.

Relationship Support: Navigating Emotional Struggles

Relationships – whether with family, friends, or romantic partners- can be a significant source of emotional distress, sometimes contributing to the urge to self-harm. Navigating these feelings can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to seek help before things spiral out of control.

At Rotherham College, we provide confidential support through our Safeguarding Services to help you manage relationship difficulties. Whether it’s a conflict with family, friends, or a significant other, we’re here to help you process these emotions and develop healthier coping strategies.

If you’re facing relationship challenges, get in touch with Safeguarding at safeguarding@rnngroup.ac.uk or call 01709 722722.

LGBT+ Support: A Welcoming and Safe Space

For LGBT+ students, struggles with identity, societal pressure, or discrimination can intensify emotional distress, making self-harm feel like an outlet. But it’s crucial to remember that support is always available, and you’re never alone.

At Rotherham College, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment where LGBT+ students can feel safe, supported, and understood. Our LGBT+ Officers are here to listen, provide emotional support, and offer guidance tailored to the unique challenges LGBT+ students face.

If you need support, reach out to our LGBT+ Officers or contact Safeguarding Services at safeguarding@rnngroup.ac.uk.

Coping Strategies: Finding Healthier Ways to Cope

Self-harm often stems from a need to cope with intense emotional pain, but there are always healthier alternatives to manage overwhelming emotions. Developing these strategies can help build long-term emotional resilience.

At Rotherham College, our Student Services are here to help you explore healthier coping mechanisms. From mindfulness and physical activities to creative outlets and stress-reduction techniques, we’ll work with you to find what works best for you.
