5 Tips for Sustainable Travel at College
Every year on 5th June, World Environment Day is celebrated to promote environmental awareness and motivate people to act against climate change. By following these five tips, you can lead a more sustainable lifestyle and help protect the environment for future generations:
1. Walking
If you live less than one mile from college, consider walking as your primary mode of transportation. Not only is walking an affordable and eco-friendly option, but it also promotes good health and mental well-being. Using a pedometer or fitness app can help motivate you towards achieving your daily step goals, which should be around 10,000 steps per day. To maximise comfort, wear comfortable shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and carry a backpack with your essentials.
2. Biking
If you live up to three miles away from college, consider cycling as an alternative to driving or taking public transport. Similar to walking, cycling is an affordable and sustainable option that provides many health benefits. On average, cycling burns around 600 calories per hour, which can help you maintain a healthy weight and improve your cardiovascular fitness. At Rotherham College, we have dedicated bike sheds and shower facilities for cyclists, making it even easier for you to get started.
3. Public Transport
By catching public transport such as buses, trains, trams, or subways, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and traffic congestion. In addition, public transport also provides an opportunity to meet new people, catch up on coursework, or simply relax during your commute. At Rotherham College, we run a dedicated shuttle bus service that connects our campuses with surrounding areas and our partner sites in Worksop and Retford. Our campus is also a short walk from the nearest train station. For more information about public transport options, please check the visitor information sections on our website.
4. Car Sharing
If public transportation is not accessible or convenient, you could consider carsharing with classmates who share a similar journey. By doing so, you can save money on fuel and parking fees while reducing your carbon emissions. When finding a new partner, always remember to establish trust and set clear boundaries before making any arrangements.
5. Hybrid or electric cars
If you like the comfort of a personal vehicle, think about selecting an electric or hybrid model. These cars significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to combustion-powered vehicles. With the ban on new combustion vehicles taking effect in 2030, investing in an electric or hybrid vehicle now could be a wise decision. At Rotherham College, electric charging points are located in the majority of car parks around Rotherham Town Centre.
