5 Tips For Living More Sustainably
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First observed in 1970, Earth Day has grown to become a global movement that promotes sustainability and encourages individuals, businesses, and governments to take action towards a cleaner, healthier planet. Earth Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in protecting the environment. By taking small steps towards sustainability, we can make a significant impact on the health of our planet.
As we become more aware of the impact we have on the planet, being environmentally friendly has become a top priority for many people. If you’re looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly, here are some simple steps you can take to make a difference:
1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The classic phrase still holds true today. Reduce your waste by buying only what you need and using reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
At Rotherham College, our Construction department re-use bricks and sand mortar, rather than throwing them away and buying in new raw materials.
2. Conserve Water
Conserving water is one of the easiest ways to be environmentally friendly. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, take short showers and baths and install water-saving devices like low-flow showerheads and toilets.
Rotherham College has a rainwater capture system that lets us use rainwater for flushing toilets, saving water from the mains.
3. Be more Energy Efficient
Rotherham College is replacing its old lightbulbs with energy-efficient lighting throughout its buildings to reduce its energy consumption. We have also implemented a range of measures to encourage staff and students to save energy, including turning off lights and other devices when not in use.
We also have a functioning wind turbine, as well as an array of solar panels across each campus, and solar powered charging points for electric vehicles at North Notts College.
4. Use Alternative Transportation
Using alternative transportation options like cycling, walking, carpooling, or taking public transit can help reduce your carbon footprint.
Rotherham College encourages sustainable travel by providing secure bike storage and changing facilities for cyclists.
5. Education and Awareness
Learning about environmental issues and sharing that knowledge with others can help raise awareness and inspire action towards a cleaner, healthier planet.
The RNN Group is committed to educating our staff and students on sustainability issues. The college offers information on sustainability, climate change, and the environment, ensuring that its students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive impact on the environment.
