The economic impact of COVID-19 has, unfortunately, affected a number of industries – with many having ground to a halt during the initial lockdown. The knock-on effects are still being felt months later.

Sadly, this means that some businesses have had to make the tough decision to make some staff redundant – including their talented and hardworking apprentices.

What should I do if I’ve been made redundant?

Firstly, don’t panic.

We know it’s disappointing to have been made redundant and you’re probably concerned about your future and how you’ll finish your apprenticeship. We can help.

Register with the Redundancy Support Service for Apprentices

The Government has launched a support service for apprentices who have been made redundant due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The support service can offer a range of advice on finding new opportunities and providing guidance on local and national support services providing financial, health and wellbeing, legal and careers advice.

You can also sign up for their free vacancy sharing service – a service full of opportunities with employers looking to employ redundant apprentices.

Polish up your CV and prepare a cover letter

If you’ve been made redundant from your apprenticeship it’s important to update your CV. Make sure you include all of the knowledge and skills you’ve gained whilst on your apprenticeship and ensure that prospective employers can see your strengths.

Prepare a cover letter – Our top tip for writing a good cover letter is to make sure it’s relevant for the role you’re applying for. It takes a little extra effort but taking a few extra minutes to tailor your cover letter to the role you’re applying for can be the difference between getting shortlisted for interview or missing out.
